Christopher Affleck Obituary, Cause of Death – A Life of Activism and Teaching
Christopher Anne Affleck, born in New York City in 1942, lived a remarkable life defined by activism, teaching, and devotion to family. From the beginning, she embraced her unconventional name, turning it into a symbol of individuality and resilience.
Chris cherished her siblings and admired her stepfather, Sam, whose WWII service and support for civil rights inspired her. At Nightingale-Bamford, she thrived academically while questioning the world around her. When challenged for criticizing Jim Crow laws, she famously called Woolworth’s to confirm whether Black customers were turned away—an early example of her determination to seek truth and act on it.
Her activism flourished in the 1960s. She taught literacy classes in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, marched against the Vietnam War, and immersed herself in counterculture. As one of the first Radcliffe women to receive a Harvard diploma, she chose teaching over more lucrative careers, spending 35 years as a public school teacher. In her classroom, every student was treated as an equal citizen, whether newly arrived from Haiti or from Cambridge’s elite.
Her greatest joy was her family. She was the proud mother of Benjamin Géza (b.1972) and Caleb Casey (b.1975), and grandmother to Indiana (2004), Violet (2005), Atticus (2008), Fin (2009), and Sam (2012). She delighted in their achievements but especially cherished their curiosity and willingness to challenge authority.
After retiring in 2008, Chris continued her activism. She volunteered for the Obama campaign, traveled to Palestine/Israel in 2009, and became an organizer with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine. In Truro, she helped found the Sustainable Cape project, and remained deeply engaged with community activism and friendships.
In December 2025, she was given six months to live. True to her spirit, she used that time meaningfully, recording oral histories and focusing on her family. Her greatest wish was to see her grandson graduate high school, which she did on May 31, 2026. She passed away peacefully in her sleep two days later.
